Pet Disability Resources

When your pet is dealing with a disability, the "best" resource depends on whether you need custom gear (like wheelchairs), financial help for surgery, or rehabilitative care near you.

Top National Resource Hubs

  • Handicapped Pets Foundation: A dedicated non-profit that donates wheelchairs to families who cannot afford them. You can apply for a donated wheelchair if you meet their financial criteria. https://hpets.org/

  • Tripawds: The leading community for three-legged pets. They offer a rehabilitation grant that pays for your pet's first consultation with a certified rehab vet.

Financial Assistance for Procedures & Gear

  • The Pet Fund: Specifically funds chronic conditions and disabilities (not basic or emergency care). This is the best place to apply for help with ongoing medical costs related to a disability.

  • Magic Bullet Fund: If the disability is a result of cancer, they provide specialized fundraising assistance.

  • Friends of Animals (Utah): While based in Utah, they maintain a national Paws for a Cause list of grants for life-altering surgeries.

Local Care & Rehab (Zachary/Baton Rouge)

  • LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital: Located in Baton Rouge, their Integrative Medicine & Rehabilitation service is the regional gold standard. They offer underwater treadmills, acupuncture, and custom orthotics/prosthetics fitting.

  • Sherwood South Animal Hospital: Provides specialized physical therapy for pets recovering from neurological issues or spinal injuries.

  • Pet Help Finder: Use this tool to find low-cost veterinary services in East Baton Rouge Parish that specifically handle mobility issues.
