Cyber Security Resources
If you're seeking assistance with government cybersecurity services, the best starting point depends on whether you are an individual, government agency looking for operational support or a business looking for guidance or contracts.
Reporting Cybercrime & Scams as an Individual.
If you have been a victim of an online scam, hack, or fraud, use these official federal channels:
FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): This is the main hub for reporting any internet-facilitated crime. You can file a report at IC3.gov for everything from email hacking to online dating scams.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC): For general scams, unwanted calls, or "bad business practices," report them at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC uses these reports to track patterns and build cases against scammers.
Local Law Enforcement: You should always file a report with your local police department to have an official record of the incident, especially if you need to provide documentation to your bank or insurance provider.
Identity Theft Recovery
If you believe your personal information (like your Social Security number) has been compromised:
IdentityTheft.gov: Use the FTC’s Identity Theft portal to get a free, personalized recovery plan and an official identity theft report.
Social Security Administration (SSA): If your SSN is specifically targeted, contact the SSA Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.
Phishing & Spam
Forward Phishing Emails: You can forward suspicious emails to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org or to CISA's phishing report address at phishing-report@us-cert.gov.
Report Spam Texts: Forward unwanted or scam text messages to 7726 (SPAM) on your mobile device to alert your carrier.
Primary Resource: CISA
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is the lead federal agency for cyber defense. They provide extensive resources and tools for both government and private sectors.
Regional Advisors: You can connect with Regional Cybersecurity Advisors (CSA) who provide tailored support and risk assessments based on your state.
No-Cost Services: CISA offers a database of free cybersecurity tools, including Cyber Hygiene Services like vulnerability scanning.
State & Local Grants: For SLTT (State, Local, Tribal, Territorial) governments, the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP) provides funding to address systemic cyber risks.
